Chapter 23

Ollie

THE FIRST GLIMMERS of dawn are visible when our captors exit the bunkroom. Leo yawns and pushes upright, then stands and stretches his back, letting out a groan. “Well, that was about the worst night's sleep I’ve ever had. Didn’t get any rest at all.”

I let out a snort as Lily gives me an incredulous look. “My ears say otherwise. In fact, I probably have permanent hearing loss.”

“What are you talking about?” Leo frowns at me, then looks at Lily. “I don’t snore.”

“You’re right, that wasn’t snoring,” Lily replies. “It was a form of auditory torture.”

He looks a little taken aback. “It must have been the angle I was lying on. I don’t ... no one’s ever said anything about me snoring before.”

Fletch walks past and slaps him on the back. “Why do you think you got upgraded to your own house after we moved into the Barracks?”

Leo screws up his nose, accentuating how crooked it is. “Because I earned it. I’m a valued member of the community. I’m Sutter’s second-in-command.” Fletch raises his eyebrows at him. “Well, I’m one of his seconds-in-command.”

“You can’t have more than one second-in-command.” I frown at him.

“Sure, you can. Both Fletch and I are, and so is Annie, and Magnus and ... it doesn’t matter how many of us are second-in-command. We’re still his right-hand people.”

“How many right hands can you have?” I smirk.

“As many as he needs,” Leo retorts, his lips drawing into a flat line.

I give him my best ‘wow that’s impressive’ look. “I had no idea I was in such esteemed company. Here I was thinking you were just another of Sutter’s minions. But it turns out I’m surrounded by his second and second and second-in-command.”

Bert chuckles, but Lily gives me a sharp look.

Fletch lets out a sigh and turns to Sutter. “Are you sure we really need both of them? As long as we’ve got Lily, we’ll be alright.”

Okay. Maybe I should rein it in a bit.

Sutter stares at me for a moment. “Unfortunately, we do.”

I smirk at Fletch and wink. Then my eyebrows shoot up in surprise that I can wink again. In fact, the swelling has gone down enough that I can see out of both eyes like normal. I turn and smile at Lily, but she frowns at me with a small shake of her head.

“Cut their feet free,” Sutter says to Leo. “It’s time to go.”

“What, no breakfast?” I cringe inwardly. I just can’t seem to stop myself. “We need to keep our strength up.”

“He’s not wrong,” Magnus says.

“Make it fast. It’s getting light,” Sutter replies. “We’ve already lost eight hours overnight.”

Ten minutes later, we’ve had breakfast, taken turns to visit the outhouse, and are ready to go with our hands zip tied in front of us. We stand next to our captors beside the Lodge, waiting for Fletch to return from some kind of reconnaissance mission Sutter sent him on. Nine large backpacks sit on the ground with weapons strapped to the side, and
